A photographer friend who lives in New York took me to a spot most visitors never find and waited beside me for the city to come up across the water. He has spent years learning where these images hide and when they appear, and that evening he handed me that knowledge so I could see the skyline the way a native does rather than a tourist. What opens from here is vast. The towers rise and glow, their light standing in for the city's ambition and its accumulated time, and at the center the Statue of Liberty sits small in form but immense in meaning, holding the scene to something older than everything around it. This is not a place to rest the eye. It is a place to let it roam, outward and upward, across all that has been built and hoped for. I keep returning to what that scale does to a person: how a moment of awe can recalibrate us, quietly reminding us of our place within something far larger than ourselves.
From this distance the statue is a point of light among many, and that is the part I keep returning to. The scale of what surrounds it is the whole subject. I follow that idea through several night photographs in Passing in the Night.
Photographed in 2018 from the New Jersey shoreline of New York Harbor, looking east toward Lower Manhattan after sunset. A long exposure holds the detail in the city lights and smooths the water, with One World Trade Center lit up and the Statue of Liberty small at the center of the frame.
