The Midwest gives you nothing obvious to look at, which is not the same as having nothing to see. Rolling fields, inland lakes, winding rivers, and a great deal of sky. With no summit or canyon rim to resolve toward, attention settles rather than fixes, and light, weather, and atmosphere become the subject because nothing else is competing for the part.
