The Rocky Mountains and the plains at their feet hold some of the most varied country in the interior West: high peaks above alpine lakes, aspen forests that turn gold each autumn, and in Yellowstone, ground that steams and shifts with the heat beneath it. Farther east, the land opens into the Dakotas, where the Badlands rise from the grass in eroded ridges and bands of color.
