ARTIST’S STORY
There is a moment at the end of every day when the sun stops being background and becomes subject.
This is that moment.
Toroweap Point on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is one of the most remote and seldom visited overlooks in the American Southwest. There are no guardrails here. No crowds. No infrastructure softening the encounter between a person and the raw edge of one of the deepest places on earth. To stand at Toroweap is to understand, immediately and physically, what it means to be at the edge of something vast and irreversible. The canyon drops nearly three thousand feet to the Colorado River below. The silence is total. The scale is genuinely confronting.
This image was made at the precise moment the sun reached the horizon -- not before, not after, but in the single second when it compressed its full remaining energy into a starburst that lit every surface in the canyon simultaneously. The foreground sandstone ignited in gold. The Colorado River far below caught the last light and carried it into the depths. The canyon walls, still warm from a full day of sun, held their color for a few minutes longer before the shadow claimed them.
Edge of Day is part of a series of images made at Toroweap across different moments, different light conditions, and different psychological registers. Each image holds a different piece of this place. This one holds the most immediate and unambiguous piece -- the sun at full and final power, making its last declaration before everything changes.
Some moments announce themselves. This one did not need to.
Each image is released in limited editions, with edition size set by presentation and scale, so the most substantial works remain the most rare.
