Southwest

The Southwest is the landscape closest to home, and familiarity has not diminished it. Red rock, canyon depth, arid distance, and a silence that is genuinely unusual rather than merely quiet. The scale here does something specific to a person standing in it. Concerns that felt urgent on the drive out arrive at their actual size, and the mind, having nothing to hurry toward, stops hurrying.
