In practice, vertical works suit the places other formats cannot reach: narrow walls between windows or doorways, entryways, the end of a hallway, a stairwell, or a quiet corner of a bedroom or study. They also work beautifully in pairs, with two verticals flanking a doorway, a bed, or a fireplace.
