Water

Water is the most psychologically active subject in this collection. Research on blue space, the term used in environmental psychology for water environments, consistently documents that proximity to water, or visual engagement with it, produces measurable reductions in stress and restored attentional capacity. The reasons are not fully understood but appear to be deeply embedded in human perceptual history. What is clear is that water holds attention differently than any other natural element, through movement, reflection, sound, and the particular quality of light it produces at its surface. These images were made across the full range of water environments, from still to moving, contained to open, and they carry the distinct psychological character of each.
