As night settles over Asakusa, the building glows from within, not demanding attention but quietly holding it. This is Kengo Kuma's stacked cedar tower across from the Kaminarimon gate, eight small houses piled into one, and after dark each layered level softens into warm light. The moment feels paused, as if the city itself has taken a breath.
I photographed it from the street corner opposite, well after dusk, once the whole structure had come alight. What drew me was the architecture and the light together, the way the cedar louvers held the glow from inside and let it out in warm bands, so the building read less like an office and more like a lantern. The warm interior light hints at lives unfolding inside, present but unhurried.
I was drawn to the balance between structure and softness, order and openness. There is a particular pull to a warm, lit interior seen from the dark outside. The nervous system leans toward it the way it leans toward a fire, reading it as shelter, as a place to be let into.
In this space, the mind slows, finding calm not in nature's absence, but in how thoughtfully designed environments can offer the same restorative pause.

Photographed in 2025 from street level at the intersection across from the Kaminarimon gate in Asakusa, Tokyo, facing the stacked corner of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, the cedar-clad building designed by Kengo Kuma and opened in 2012. Made after dusk, once the interior was fully lit. The stillness in the frame was constructed frame over frame, several exposures stacked and blended to remove the passing crowd so that only the building and the empty crossing remain. In the frame are the building's eight stacked stories, an empty pedestrian crossing in the foreground, and the neighboring shops and signage at the Kaminarimon corner. Offered in vertical orientation as a limited edition archival print in 16 by 24 inches to 56 by 84 inches on acrylic, metal, or archival paper.
Each image is released in limited editions, with edition size set by presentation and scale, so the most substantial works remain the most rare.
