How small is too small for a photograph this wide?
At three to one, the Intimate size is thirty six inches across but only twelve inches tall. On most walls that reads as a band rather than a window, which suits a narrow space above a doorway or a hallway run but works against a piece meant to anchor a room. The Collected and Statement sizes are where the width does the work described above.
What changes at the largest size?
The jetty runs from the near corner of the frame to a point far out in the water, and how much of that run you can actually read depends entirely on size. At twelve inches tall, the far end is a suggestion. The pilings merge, the railing dissolves, and the eye stops somewhere in the middle distance. At thirty inches tall, the far end resolves. You can follow the structure all the way out, count the posts as they recede, and see where the surf breaks against the last of them. The same is true of the planking underfoot, which reads as a texture at the smaller sizes and as individual split boards at the largest. This matters more here than it would for a photograph with a single subject. The whole image is built on distance, and distance is the first thing a small print gives up. Why scale matters covers what happens perceptually when a landscape reaches the size where the eye has to travel across it.
