Each gate was placed here by someone who wanted to say thank you.
That is the tradition at Fushimi Inari Taisha. The vermillion torii are not decoration. They are offerings, donated by individuals, families, and businesses across centuries, each one inscribed with the name of the giver and the date of the gift. What looks like architecture is actually devotion made physical. A path built entirely from gratitude.
I walked this corridor before the light had fully arrived, when the color was still deepening and the stone path held the quiet of early morning. The gates recede into the distance in both directions, and there is a moment, somewhere in the middle, where you lose your sense of where ordinary space ends and sacred space begins.
That is the point, I think. The repetition is not redundant. It is cumulative. Each threshold crossed adds to the ones before it, and by the time the corridor has worked its way into you, something has shifted. You are not the same person who stepped in at the beginning.
Where Prayers Walk is an invitation to let the passage do what it was designed to do.
