ARTIST’S STORY
The Navajo people have always known what this image shows.
Mother Earth below, red and ancient, holding the weight of everything that lives and grows and walks upon her. Father Sky above, vast and luminous, arching across the darkness with light that traveled billions of years to reach this particular stretch of desert on this particular night. Between them, the mittens and buttes of Monument Valley, rising from the earth like children standing in the presence of something immeasurably larger than themselves.
I set up before midnight and waited. The Milky Way does not appear so much as reveal itself, slowly, as your eyes adjust and the sky deepens and what you thought was darkness turns out to be anything but.
Standing there, the scale of it does something to the nervous system that is difficult to describe. Not fear. Not smallness exactly. Something closer to proportion. A recalibration of what matters and what does not, arrived at not through thinking but through simply looking up.
Mother Earth, Father Sky is an image about belonging. About being held between two ancients who have always been in relationship with each other, and always will be.
We are simply fortunate to stand between them.
