ARTIST'S STORY
Maligne Canyon cuts through Jasper National Park in Alberta to a depth of more than fifty meters, and in places it is only about two meters across. The limestone it is carved into was laid down on the floor of a shallow tropical sea some 365 million years ago. A boulder sits wedged in the narrows overhead, dropped there and held, and the water falls past it into a dark that most of the daylight never reaches.
I first came across this place on an earlier trip, and returned the following summer for the few mornings each July when the sun clears the rim at the right angle and sends a single shaft straight down into the slot. I came back to this spot again and again across those mornings, waiting on that alignment and on the mist coming up off the water.
Most of what happens down there happens unseen. The water has been cutting that rock for far longer than anyone has been standing at the rim watching it, and it will keep cutting whether or not anyone comes. There is a specific relief in that for a mind that spends its days keeping track of things, checking, holding the thread. Here is a place that does not require your attention in order to continue. You can set that down for a while and simply look.
In July 2024 the fire came through this valley and took the forest that framed this place. The canyon is still there, older than all of it, closed now while the ground is made safe again.
Heart of the Forest is that one shaft of light reaching the bottom of a very old, very narrow place, on a morning when the forest above it was still standing.

About This Photograph
Photographed at Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, from the canyon rim looking down into the gorge, on a July morning shortly after sunrise. This was a single exposure image. The subject is the narrow slot of Maligne Canyon, carved into Palliser Formation limestone deposited roughly 365 million years ago, worn in places to about two meters across and more than fifty meters deep. Suspended across the narrows is a chockstone, a boulder wedged between the canyon walls, whose form resembles two joined hearts and gives the photograph its name. The frame holds the heart-shaped chockstone, the waterfall dropping beneath it, mist rising through a shaft of morning light, and the mossed walls and conifers of the surrounding forest. In July 2024 the Jasper Wildfire Complex burned more than 32,000 hectares of the park, including the forest around this canyon, and Maligne Canyon has remained closed to visitors since while Parks Canada carries out hazard assessment and rehabilitation. Presented as a vertical print, offered as an archival limited edition from 16 by 24 inches to 56 by 84 inches on acrylic, metal, or archival paper.
